Interview Transcript
What makes a professional Makeup Artist?
Kitty Dunbar
So I think first and foremost, your technical skills, a deep understanding of products and how they interact with each other and different skin tones and types. Staying updated on all the recent trends and excellent communication skills can also be super helpful.
How do you create a unique makeup experience for each bride?
Kitty Dunbar
I think it's important to start with a thorough consultation process so that you can really get to know your bride, what her preferences are, what her skin issues or type is. Also, what her personal style is cause I think that says a lot about people's makeup preferences.
How do you take care of the bride leading up to the event day?
Kitty Dunbar
Once all their other details are finalized with their vendors, really locking in your final details, your schedule, who are you working with for hair, and kind of really keeping all of those lines of communication open so that everything is sign-sealed and delivered for the big day.
Do you use makeup the bride provides?
Kitty Dunbar
So typically I prefer to use my own products that are in my kit. There are extenuating circumstances where clients have super sensitivities or allergic reactions to certain products that if I don't have the time to consult with them prior to, which isn't the case for most brides. There's a lot of time leading up to where we can kind of rule out any sensitivities or allergies.
What is the best tip you can give for a bride?
Kitty Dunbar
I think skincare is where brides should start with everything. Once you've had your makeup artist, once you've hired her, it's really working with that makeup artist to go over your skincare routine, any issues, concerns that you may have about your skin, dry, oily, um, and really kind of honing in on those issues because at the end of the day, your makeup is only as good as your skin. So if your skin's not good, the makeup is not going to look its best.
